Anti-immigrant

Although anti-immigrant sentiments often are compounded with xenophobia, nativism and/or racism, this is not always the case.

Anti-immigrant sentiments in a pure form can be exemplified by immigration and immigrants being believed to:

  • isolate themselves in their own communities and refusing to learn the language/culture.

  • steal the jobs

  • damage the sense of community and nationality

Prominent opinion leaders that oppose immigration and immigrants' rights often share a political right-wing orientation, blaming immigration for several problems from unemployment to detoriating public education. Their critics often argue that while the problems are real, blaming immigrants is rather a form of scapegoating.
