Assimilation (linguistics)

Assimilation is a process by which two different consonants in a word which are to be pronounced one after the other become a double consonant because that way the word is easier to pronounce.

Examples

  • The word assimilation itself (from Latin ad + simile)
  • illegible (in + legible)
  • suppose (sub + pose)
  • Egitto, dottore, and many more words in Italian

Numerous examples can be found at Compound verbs in English consisting of Latin prefix and Latin verb.
