Aumakua

In Huna, the religion of early Hawaii, Aumakua ("ghost of your ancestors") is the higher soul, which ascended to heaven after death. It is also the name of the god who acts as psychopomp and takes the soul to heaven. The word also denotes a friendly and protecting animal spirit. An Aumakua of a shark spirit was thought to be very good for a fisherman and would increase his skills, but also meant that he couldn't be trusted. Category:Polynesian mythology
