Brazilian national anthem
The Brazilian National Anthem ( Hino Nacional Brasileiro in Portuguese) was first composed by Francisco Manoel da Silva upon independence from Portugal in 1822, but was not used until 1890. Instead, the first anthem was the Hino da Independência composed by the first emperor, Pedro I. With the establishment of a republic in 1889, lyrics were written by Joaquim Osório Duque Estrada to go with Francisco Manoel da Silva's song. However, the original music has been modified slightly.

\n | \n\nIt was heard, at the Ipiranga's placid banks, \nThe resounding cry of a heroic people. \nAnd the sun of freedom, in bright rays, \nShone at this moment in the homeland's skies.\n |
\nSe o penhor dessa igualdade \nConseguimos conquistar com braço forte, \nEm teu seio, ó Liberdade, \nDesafia o nosso peito a própria morte! \n | \n\nAs the promise of this equality \nWas secured by our strong arms, \nIn your bosom, O Freedom, \nOur heart defies even death.\n |
\nÓ Pátria amada, \nIdolatrada, \nSalve! Salve! \n | \n\nO beloved, idolized homeland, hail, hail!\n |
\n | \n\nBrazil, a vivid dream, a lively ray \nOf love and hope settles on the earth, \nAs in your beautiful sky, smiling and limpid, \nThe image of the Southern Cross shines resplendent.\n |
\nGigante pela própria natureza, \nÉs belo, és forte, impávido colosso, \nE o teu futuro espelha essa grandeza, \n | \n\nA giant by nature, you are beautiful, \nStrong, an intrepid colossus, \nAnd your future mirrors this grandeur.\n |
| \nChorus:\n | \nChorus:\n |
\nTerra adorada, \nEntre outras mil, \nÉs tu, Brasil, \nÓ Pátria amada!\n | \n\nO land we adore, \namong a thousand others \nYou are, Brazil, the beloved one!\n |
\nDos filhos deste solo és mãe gentil, \nPátria amada, \nBrasil!\n | \n\nYou are the gentle mother of the sons of this land, \nBeloved homeland, \nBrazil!\n |

\n | \n\nEternally laid in a splendid cradle, \nTo the sound of the sea and the light from the depths of the sky, \nBrazil, you gleam, fleuron of the Americas, \nIlluminated by the sun of the New World.\n |
\n | \n\nYour smiling, lovely fields have more flowers \nThan the most attractive land elsewhere, \nOur forests have more life, \nOur life in your bosom more love.\n |
\nÓ Pátria amada, \nIdolatrada, \nSalve! Salve! \n | \n\nO beloved, idolized homeland, hail, hail!\n |
\n | \n\nBrazil, may the starry banner you display \nBe a symbol of eternal love, \nAnd may the green laurel of this pennant speak \nOf peace in the future and glory in the past.\n |
\nMas, se ergues da justiça a clava forte, \nVerás que um filho teu não foge à luta, \nNem teme, quem te adora, a própria morte, \n | \n\nBut if you raise a strong cudgel in the name of justice, \nYou will see that a son of yours does not run from a fight, \nNor does one who adores you fear death.\n |
