\nThe true crows are in the genus Corvus; they are large Passerine birds. As a group they show remarkable examples of intelligence and one species, the New Caledonian Crow, has recently been intensively studied because of its ability to manufacture and use its own tools in the day-to-day finding of food. All temperate continents (except, surprisingly, South America) and several offshore and oceanic islands (including Hawaii) have representatives of the 40 or so members of this genus. Crows appear to have evolved in central Asia and radiated out into North America (including Mexico), Africa, Europe, and Australia. They range in size from the relatively small pigeon-sized jackdaws (Eurasian and Daurian) to the Common Raven of the Palearctic region and Thick-billed Raven of the highlands of Ethiopia. \nAustralian species:\n*Australian Raven C. coronoides\n*Forest Raven C. tasmanicus\n**Relict Raven C. t. boreus\n*Little Crow C. bennetti\n*Little Raven C. mellori\n*Torresian Crow or Australian Crow C. orru North American species:\n*American Crow C. brachyrhynchos\n*Chihuahuan Raven C. cryptoleucos\n*Common Raven C. corax\n*Fish Crow C. ossifragus\n*Northwestern Crow C. caurinus\n*Tamaulipas Crow C. imparatus\n*Sinaloan Crow C. sinaloae African species:\n*Cape Crow C. capensis\n*Fan-tailed Raven C. rhipidurus\n*Pied Crow C. albus\n*Somali Crow or Dwarf Raven C. edithae\n*Thick-billed Raven C. crassirostris\n*White-necked Raven C. albicollis North African & Asia Minor species:\n*Brown-necked Raven C. ruficollis\n*Hooded Crow C. cornix\n*Common Raven C. corax\n*Fan-tailed Raven C. rhipidurus European species:\n*Carrion Crow C. corone\n*Common Raven C. corax\n*Hooded Crow C. cornix\n*Jackdaw C. monedula \n*Rook C. frugilegus Asian species:\n*Carrion Crow C. corone\n*Collared Crow C. torquatus\n*Daurian Jackdaw C. dauricus\n*House Crow C. splendens\n*Jungle Crow C. macrorhynchos\n*Rook C. frugilegus\n*Common Raven C. corax The islands between Southeast Asia and Australia have several species, as do the West Indies off the south east coast of the North American continent. A few Pacific islands (including Hawaii) have representative species also. For more information regarding crows, see the individual species.
