Film criticismFilm critics should be distinguished from film reviewers. Most people who call themselves film critics and publish commentary on films in periodicals are actually film reviewers. Film criticism is actually more closely aligned with philosophy than it is commentary. The film critic tries to come to understand why film works, how it works, and what effects it has on people. (See also film theory.) The film reviewer, on the other hand, looks a film's production values and general enjoyability in order to make a value judgement about the film. The distinction is not always precise; many critics have also written simple reviews (especially early in their careers), and reviewers sometimes take the kind of detached, scholarly approach associated with true criticism.
