Fuad I of Egypt![]() Fuad I of Egypt (March 26, 1868 - April 28, 1936) was the first King of Egypt in the modern era. He became sultan in 1917. As sultan, he ruled the dominion of Egypt and later became king when Britain granted Egypt independence in 1922. He ruled as king until his death in 1936. He was the father of his successor, Farouk of Egypt. Fuad I spoke no Arabic, but he made sure his son Farouk did so. See also: List of Rulers of Modern Egypt
