George Ogden Abell

George Ogden Abell (1927 – October 7 1983) was an astronomer at UCLA who catalogued many clusters of galaxies, including:

• Abell 400 - galaxy cluster\n*Abell 426 - galaxy cluster\n*Abell 569 - galaxy cluster\n*Abell 1631 galaxy cluster\n*Abell 1656 galaxy cluster\n*Abell 1689 galaxy cluster\n*Abell 1795 galaxy cluster\n*Abell 1835 IR1916 furthest known galaxy, seen by gravitational lensing\n*Abell 2029 galaxy cluster\n*Abell 2142 galaxy cluster\n*Abell 2218 galaxy cluster, used for gravitational lensing\n*Abell 2256 galaxy cluster

Also co-discovered periodic comet 52P/Harrington-Abell. At the time of his death, he was to have become editor of the Astronomical Journal effective January 1 1984.
