Giambattista BasileGiambattista Basile (died circa 1637) was the Conte di Torronea, a soldier and government official,\nwho is known for writing the collection of Neapolitan fairy tales\ntitled Lo cunto de li cunti (Neapolitan dialect for The Story of Stories), or Il Pentamerone\npublished in Naples, Italy in [1634]]. He recorded and adapted the tales, believed to be orally transmitted around Crete and Venice, and\nseveral were also recorded later by Charles Perrault;\nexamples are versions of Cinderella, Rapunzel, Puss in Boots,\nSleeping Beauty, and Hansel and Gretel. |
