Gonagas

The title gonagas (or konagas), master of the fjelds (bare mountains), was a position in pre-christian period in the Northen Scandinavia amongs shamans (noajddes) which possessed special level of wisedom or knowledge and therefore possessed a higher position than other citiziens. According to the myth they could "spiritual communicate," i.e. travel to trading ports and see what peoples that would come to trade in forehand. And he could not be burned on the stake because the fire would be smothered in the same way water cannot be ignited. (Lundius, 1905 (facsimile)) Spiritual communicate might refer to a messenger (such as carrier pigeons) and the supernatural ability presumably refers to cleverness such as to not show the heathenry. (Sami) Gonogas, (Old Icelandic) konr and (English) king might share the same etymology.
