Human Rights Campaign

The Human Rights Campaign, an organization founded in 1980, works for lesbian, gay, and bisexual (LGBT) equal rights. It is the largest lesbian and gay political organization in the United States. Officially, it also represents the transgender community. However, it has been the target of protests due to its refusal to demand the inclusion of the transgendered in the ENDA bill. Elizabeth Birch served as the executive director from January 1995 until January 2004; under her leadership, the institution more than quadrupled its membership to 500,000. Cheryl Jacques is the present executive director.
