Kirkland Lake is a town located in Timiskaming District, Ontario, Canada, the county seat of which is in Haileybury, Ontario. The 2001 population, according to Statistics Canada, was 8,616. The lake nearby was named after Winnifred Kirkland, a secretary of the Ontario Department of Mines, in Toronto. The name was given by a surveyor named Louis Rorke, in 1907. Ms. Kirkland had actually never visited this town and the lake that bared her name is now no longer there because of minetailings. Kirkland Lake is served by radio station CJKL-FM and the Northern Daily News.
