Knobcone Pine
The
Knobcone Pine (
Pinus attenuata) is a
tree that grows in mild climates on poor soils. It ranges from
Oregon to
Baja California with the greatest concentration in northern
California and the Oregon-California border. This
pine reaches heights of 8-20 m on rocky, volcanic soil on sloping ground.
The needles are in bundles of three, about 9-15 cm long. The cones are clustered on branches and are 8-16 cm long. The cones remain closed for many years until a fire opens them and allows reseeding.
