North East England

North East England is one of the
regions of England. The region is also sometimes known by the alternative title,
Northumbria. A more detailed look at the history, culture and dialect of the region may be found in the article on Northumbria.
The region is expected to have a
referendum on
November 4,
2004 about the establishment of an elected
regional assembly.
It is divided into the following
local government areas:
The region was originally defined as
Northumberland,
Tyne and Wear,
County Durham,
Cleveland. Since then, Tyne and Wear County Council has been abolished, Darlington has seceded from County Durham, and Cleveland was split into four.
