The
Platy (
Xiphophorus maculatus) is a popular
freshwater aquarium fish species.\nIt is a member of the
Poeciliidae family and is therefore
live-bearing. It is closely related to the
swordtail.
Platys are easy to keep and well suited to a community
aquarium. They prefer water with a 7.0 - 8.0
pH, a water hardness of 9.0 - 19.0
dGH, and a temperature range of 64 - 77 F (18 - 25 C). Female Platys give birth to about 40-50 young a time.
The male Platy has a pointy tailfin, the female's tailfin is more round.
The species originally comes from
Central America (Mexico).
