Regions of Lithuania
Lithuania is divided into historical and cultural regions:
- Aukštaitija (literally Upper Lithuania) comprises present Vilnius county, Utena County, Panevėžys County and the eastern part of Šiauliai County. Kaunas, Alytus and Marijampolė counties also are comprised by Aukštaitija, being in Dzūkija and Sudovia. Kaunas County also is divided between Samogitia and Aukštaitija \n*Samogitia, (Žemaitija, literally Lower Lithuania) comprises approximately present Telšiai County, the northern part of Tauragė and the western part of Šiauliai counties. \n*Lithuania Minor (Mažoji Lietuva) also known as Prussian Lithuania (Prūsų Lietuva), its part in Lithuania comprises present Klaipėda County, and the southern part of Tauragė County. \n* Dzūkija (Dzūkija) is a part of Aukštaitija, its part in Lithuania comprises present Alytus County and the southern part of Vilnius County. \n*Sudovia (Sūduva or Suvalkija) also sometimes is treated as a part of Aukštaitija. It comprises present Marijampolė County and the southern part of Kaunas County.
