Rhythm sectionRhythm section refers to the musicians whose primary jobs in a jazz or popular music band or ensemble is to establish the rhythm of a song or musical piece. It may also refer to the instrumentss of those musicians. Most commonly, a rhythm section consists of musicians playing drums and bass guitar. It may also include other percussion instruments, piano, or guitar. Rock music tends to have a more stripped-down drum and bass rhythm section, whereas jazz and highly produced pop music often include more musicians, although many exceptions to this rule exist. In some cases, the lower octaves of a piano, organ, or electronic keyboard may substitue for bass guitar. One of the best known examples of this was keyboardist Ray Manzarek of The Doors. |
