It has borders with Norfolk to the north, Cambridgeshire to the west and Essex to the south. The North Sea lies to the east. The county town is Ipswich and other important towns are Lowestoft and Bury St Edmunds. The Suffolk Broads area is part of The Broads National Park.\nThe Suffolk Coast and Heaths AONB is an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. From 1889 to 1974, Suffolk was split into two administrative counties, East Suffolk and West Suffolk, with East Suffolk's council based in Ipswich, and West Suffolk's in Bury St Edmunds.
