Toots & the Maytals

Frederick "Toots" Hibbert and the Maytals are considered legends of Reggae and ska music.\n"Toots" was born in Maypen in the Parish of Clarendon, Jamaica. He was the youngest of seven children. He grew up singing gospel music in a church choir, but went to Kingston, Jamaica when he was a teenager in the early Sixties.\nIn Kingston, he met and recorded with Raleigh Gordon and Jerry Matthias, thus forming the original Maytals. Early recordings may have been attributed to The Vikings.\nToots and the Maytals recorded at Studio One early in their career.\n \n"Do the Reggay," a 1968 single by Toots and the Maytals, is credited with coining the phrase reggae. Classic songs written and recorded by Toots and the Maytals have been covered by the likes of the Clash and the Specials, and the group was featured in reggae's greatest breakthrough event - The Harder They Come, the 1972 film and soundtrack by Jimmy Cliff. Toots and the Maytals dissolved in the early 1980s after having toured throughout the world for many years, but Toots and the Maytals was revived in the early Nineties to continue touring and recording successfully into the new century.
