Type 1 product

In cryptography, a Type 1 product is a device or system that makes use of high-grade, classified encryption algorithms certified by the National Security Agency (NSA). They are used in securing classified and sensitive U.S Government information. The ciphers used in Type 1 products are called Type 1 algorithms. Typically, the only information that was publicly known about Type 1 algorithms is a name and interface — such as key size or block size. Two secret Type 1 algorithms are BATON and JUNIPER. There is evidence that they are 128-bit block ciphers which make use of a 320-bit key. However, 160-bits of the key are used as "checksum" bits. The ciphers are associated with NSA's MISSI (Multi-level Information Systems Security Initiative) program and the Fortezza cards. BATON is an NSA-designed cipher which is reportedly faster than Skipjack [1]. Another Type 1 algorithm (or possibly family of algorithms, or possibly a protocol that uses other Type 1 algorithms) is SAVILLE, used for voice encryption in the KY-57 cryptographic device.
