ÜberwaldIn Terry Pratchett's fictional universe of Discworld, Überwald is a country on the other side of the Ramtops from Lancre and Ankh-Morpork. Meaning in German across the woods, Überwald is a play on Transylvania, which means the same thing in Latin. In fact, this name was actually used for Transylvania in some documents of 13th century. Although it has a large human population, they play a secondary role in the regions history. It is known for and ruled by its dwarves, vampires and werewolves. Previously there had been an Unholy Empire ruling it, but the region is now fragmented and chaotic. Carpe Jugulum dealt with a family of vampires from Überwald attempting to take over Lancre. The novel The Fifth Elephant was set mostly in Überwald, and details a power-struggle between the dwarves, vampires and werewolves. Many characters in the books, including Angua, Cheery Littlebottom, Igor, and Otto Chriek were originally from Überwald. Category:Discworld locations |
