Volcanoes of Iceland

Iceland has due to its special geological conditions a very high number of active volcanoes. The island has about 130 of these mountains, but only some of them are erupting in one century or with a certain regularity like for example the mountains Hekla or Krafla. Geologists explain the fact by the island's position on the Mid-Atlantic Ridge and on the other hand by a theoretical hotspot that was for some time supposed to be under the island.\n\n

Volcanoes

The most important volcanoes of Iceland are: In the south resp. west of the island: Hekla, Mýrdalsjökull with Katla, Eldgjá and the Laki craters, Hvannadalshnjúkur (or Öræfajökull), Snæfellsjökull and Baula. In the north of the country and in the interior: the glacier Vatnajökull with Bárdarbunga, Grimsvötn and Kverkfjöll, Krafla, Askja and Herðubreið. Aditionnally there are some very active volcanoes on the Vestmannaeyjar like f.ex. Surtsey or Eldfell on Heimaey.\n There are also to be found some other regions of high temperature like Hengill central volcano with Hveragerði and Haukadalur with the well known Geysir.
