Born in a small village named Sandhwan, near Kot Kapura to Mata Ind Kaur and Bhai Kishan Singh.\nHe was the chief minister of Punjab from 1972 until 1977, the home affairs minister of India from 1980 until 1982, and the president of India from 1982 until 1987.
